Scientists estimate there are at least 100 million unnamed species living in the depths of the ocean.
As I have said before the ocean provides us with so much. The majority of oxygen and rain in our atmosphere is created by the ocean. Not only does it create weather, regulate temperature, absorbs more than 2 million tons of carbon dioxide per annum, disperse species, feed and transport us, it holds healing properties that could cure disease.
Some conservationists are overwhelmed by the amount of destruction and pollution our oceans have suffered and have lost hope. But, loosing hope is the last thing we should do. The oceans have survived so much and have remained unchanged for millennia. It is selfish and ignorant of humans to do so much damage in such a short time without making efforts to reverse their impact.
You can begin anywhere, even efforts to volunteer cleaning up beaches, harbours, estuaries can make a difference. We must remind ourselves we are from the ocean as it is the cradle of life - and without it the entire world will cease to exist as we know it.
