
Carrageenan is a sugar compound found in red algae it, some of its most common uses are:
- makes peanut butter and toothpaste spreadable
- gives shampoo, ice cream, chocolate milk its consistency.
- as a fat substitute in pates and processed meats
- as a thickener to cause fire fighting foam to become sticky
- as a shoe polish
- to suspend flavours in diet sodas

- thickening agent in soups and yogurt
- used as a laxative
- a produce preservative for fruit and vegetables

- cosmetics are not made with carrageenan, but more commonly in the past were made from blubber
- kelp is also used in shampoos and cake mixes
- salad dressing has algin, a form of brown algae
- SPF 50 sunblock was developed from coral reef organisms
- anti-inflammatory properties in allergy medicine from sea whip corals
